AULDGUBBINS.CO.UK – Retro, theatre, film, history, and Associated auld gubbins

We’re going back, back, back in time a whole 90 years to when the People’s Palace presented The Painted Veil, based on the novel by Somerset Maugham.

Fact fans may like to know that the People’s Palace for the recreation, amusement and education of the people of the East End of London was built in 1886 / 1887, being officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1887. The project included a technical school, swimming baths, winter gardens, gymnasium and lecture rooms.

It was sold to the University of London on the fifties and there is still some of it left. Playbill is here.
