He Was Born Gay and Mother Goose

Two very different nights oot in Embra back in the old days.  One worth watching and one with John Gielgud.

Nowadays you’d get a very different kind of play, if He Was Born Gay was the title. But back in May 1937 when John Gielgud came a-calling, there was no such problem.

This was a romance in three acts by Emlyn Williams, who also appeared alongside well known actor, Harry Andrews.

It was also good to know that the performance on May 12th was delayed, so that folks could listen to the King’s speech. That is if they weren’t busy drinking milk from the dairy in West Bryson Road (which was still there when I was a boy!).

Much more palatable is a flyer for Mother Goose at the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh – a Stanley Baxter pantomime, also featuring John Grieve, Pat Michael, Frances Barlow and Ian Paterson – undated, but I reckon it was for Christmas 1970.
